Cricket Media Super Sixes Week 5

Last Friday night Carlton took on a new-look Grange side to become the first team to progress to the Cricket Media Super Sixes finals.

All eyes were on the first match of the night- following two convincing victories in the first round of fixtures, Carlton were favourites to progress and would do so if they managed to record a solitary victory from their two matches.

For Grange to progress, they were required to inflict heavy defeats on Carlton and Stenhousemuir to overtake their Edinburgh rivals.

Grange welcomed back wicket keeper Simon Smith, after his stint at Heriot’s and handed a debut to fellow Scotland teammate, Ryan Flannigan who joined the club from Watsonians.

Carlton won the toss and chose to bat first.  Scotland batsmen, Fraser Watts and Preston Mommsen top scored with 35* and 32* respectively as Carlton amassed 124-4 from their 10 overs.

Gregor Maiden led the Grange run chase with an unbeaten score of 55, but ran out of partners and overs, just 13 runs short of the Carlton total.  Fraser Watts was the unlikely pick of the bowlers with 3-20 from his allotted 2 overs.

Stenhousemuir couldn’t reproduce the same form as displayed in last year’s competition as they fell once again to the Edinburgh sides.  The Tryst batsmen couldn’t post enough runs for the bowlers to defend.  However, Amir Shazhad didn’t disappoint for Stenhousemuir with a resilient knock of 45 against Grange.

Last Fridays results mean that Carlton are the first team to progress to finals night on 2 March, where they will meet the winner of Group B; Heriot’s, Murrayfield DAFS or S.M.R.H.
