ICC Men’s T20 World Cup: Qualification process explained

Table Standings

Scotland are currently vying for one of six places up for grabs at next year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia.

After two wins and two losses, we explain the qualification process as we sit in third place in Group A at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier in UAE.

First placed teams

From the two groups, the top team qualify for next year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and go straight to the semi-finals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier.

Second, third and fourth placed teams

Second, third and fourth in each group have to win one more game to qualify.

Second and third get two opportunities to do so, the fourth placed team gets one opportunity.

Firstly, second and third from Group A play third and second from Group B. Winners of these games qualify for next year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and meet the group winners in the semi-finals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier.

Next, losers of the the second vs third games play the fourth placed teams. Winners of these games qualify and play each other for the fifth and sixth finishing place. Losers are knocked out.

Winners of the semi-finals play each other in the final. Losers of the semi-finals play each other for third and fourth finishing place.

Fifth, sixth and seventh placed teams

Fifth, sixth and seventh in each group are knocked out of the competition.

Scotland next play bottom of the group Bermuda at Dubai International Stadium on 24th October (live on Sky Sports from 16:20) before taking on Netherlands on 27th October at the same venue, also to be shown on Sky Sports at 10:00.
