Carlton win 2013 Scottish Cup

11 Sep

From Carlton CC

Carlton WomenIn only their second season, the Carlton women lifted the Scottish Cup to round off the club’s 150th Anniversary year in style.

Facing St Boswells in the first semi-final at Ayr, Katie McGill, Louie Gardiner and Ruth Willis were all in the runs as Carlton posted a competitive 74 for 4 off their 15 overs. All rounder McGill then claimed the wicket of Caitlin Ormiston before turning the match with the decisive run out of  93 times capped Scotland batter Kathryn White to halt the St Boswells charge, before tight bowling and fielding saw Carlton to a 16 run win.

The winners of the second semi final, Glasgow Accies, faced Carlton in the final. Again Carlton batted first but this time the batting didn't really fire at the top of the order and the side were indebted to a late burst of hitting from Lily Steindl, who finished on 15 not out to take her side to 65 for 6 from their 15 overs.

An early wicket from Katie McGill had Accies on the back foot but the game was in the balance as Accies needed just 20 off the last four overs. However, a devastating burst of 3 wickets for no runs from young off-spinner Caitlin Heathcote, including the key wicket of Scotland cap Abtaha Maqsood for 32, was decisive as Carlton ran out winners by 16 runs to lift the cup.

Needless to say, there was a warm welcome awaiting skipper Helen Blair and her team as they arrived back at Grange Loan to celebrate the club’s second Scottish Cup victory in just two weeks.
