Cricket Scotland Head To Shetland

03 Oct

On Tuesday 7 October. Cricket Scotland’s Ian Sandbrook and former Scotland Captain Gordon Drummond are visiting the Shetland Islands with Peter Gray from Cricket Factory to deliver a development initiative that will look to raise the profile of Cricket on the Shetland Islands.

Ian Sandbrook, Acting Development Manager, Cricket Scotland ‘We’re thrilled to be able to promote our sport from the Shetland Isles, where cricket is more popular than many would think. It’s a unique place to launch our initiative and we’ve already been overwhelmed by the support from the Shetland Islands Council and Shetland Cricket Association as well as Cricket Factory. It promises to be a great occasion.”

The day starts with school based activity sessions for pupils at Bells Brae Primary School and Scalloway School where the pupils will experience a Cricket Factory Skills Circuit using equipment sets being donated by Cricket Scotland.

In the afternoon they will go onto deliver a training session for teachers, teaching assistants, active Schools Staff and parents who may be interested in developing curriculum, lunchtime and after school Cricket activities and ultimately lead into an inter-school Cricket activities programme.

Clark Denby, Sports Development Officer for Shetland Islands Council commented, ‘I am very excited about Bells Brae Primary School and Scalloway School’s involvement in both hosting the events and getting staff and pupils involved. We have seen schools staff throughout Shetland signing up to get involved in the curriculum based cricket activities.I feel that this is a great opportunity to show sports governing bodies that Shetland is a fantastic sporting and PE community. This will be a great teaching and learning opportunity that will undoubtedly benefit the pupils and wider community.’

Peter Gray, Owner Cricket Factory, ‘Since starting working with Cricket Scotland it has always been an ambition of their Development Manager to get Cricket Factory into a schools club programme on the Shetland Islands. I am thrilled that the opportunity has arisen this year and am looking forward to visiting the Island.’
