CS confirm venues and squads for UAE series

04 Aug

Cricket Scotland today confirmed the change of venues for the Intercontinental Cup (9-12 August) and World Cricket League Championship (14 and 16 August) fixtures against the United Arab Emirates.

The Intercontinental Cup tie will be contested at New Cambusdoon, Ayr Cricket Club and the two World Cricket League Championship fixtures will be played at Grange CC, Edinburgh.

The matches were originally scheduled for Aberdeen, but the decision was taken to move the ties after significant amounts of rain in the north.

Preston Mommsen will lead both squads in these important set of matches for Scotland’s national side, who currently sit fifth in the Intercontinental Cup and fourth in the World Cricket League Championship table.

Chris Sole is the only un-capped player to be named in the squad and will hope to force his way into the starting eleven to follow David Sole, his rugby-playing father, and sister, Gemma, who has played netball for Scotland, in earning international recognition.

The squad features several of Scotland’s county-playing contingent with Calum MacLeod, Michael Leask and Josh Davey named in both squads.

27-year-old wicket-keeper David Murphy will push for his first full Scotland appearance since 2013 for the Intercontinental Cup match, with Matthew Cross recovering from a broken thumb against Afghanistan. It is expected that Cross will return for the World Cricket League fixtures.

On the announcements Head Coach Grant Bradburn commented,This series presents a great opportunity to exert home advantage.

Although this season has been very lean in terms of International fixtures our squad have enjoyed the opportunity to train consistently and play a full part in the domestic programme with their club and Regional teams.  On the back of two weeks of A Team cricket we look forward to taking on UAE in this I-Cup and WCL series.

Our depth has been tested for this series with three players (Matt Machan, Matthew Cross and Gavin Main) still returning from injury and not considered ready for the four day I-Cup fixture, while Brad Wheal is also unavailable.

Despite some unavailability’s we have selected a strong and balanced side which sees a number of players rewarded for consistent performances this season.”

On the naming of potential new cap Chris Sole, Bradburn added, “Chris has earned his place in the squad following significant performances at club Regional and Scotland A level. He has genuine pace and it will be exciting to see him break through to full International level for the first time.”
