15 Jul

Gloucestershire 2nd XI 299-7 dec (D Housego 76, M Hammond 71no, C Miles 49; M Iqbal 3-66) Scotland Development XI 24-0.

Saltires star Safyaan Sharif came off second best when he lined-up against his Scotland team-mates yesterday.

The Falkland all-rounder, on trial at Gloucestershire, made just four runs for the county’s second string on the opening day of a three-day encounter at Bristol.

Sharif was then trapped-in front by Moneeb Iqbal but will get a second chance to shine with the ball when play resumes this morning.

Iqbal was the pick of the Scottish bowlers on a day when honours ended even.

The leg-spinner claimed 3-66 while fellow spinner Mark Watt impressed on debut, bowling eighteen tight overs and picking up the key wicket of Gloucester’s top scorer Dan Housego for 76.

Gordon Goudie had earlier pegged-back the home batsmen with a double strike.

Gloucestershire’s declared on 299-7 but Scotland openers Hamish Gardiner and Andrew Umeed survived to reach the close on 24-0.
