Machan to captain Scots against NZA
The Scotland selectors today announced their squad to face New Zealand A in Ayr (15th/17th August) and Edinburgh (21st August) in a series of 50 over matches.
Matt Machan is set to captain his country for the first time after Kyle Coetzer (county commitments) and Preston Mommsen (broken finger*) were both ruled out of selection.
George Munsey could make his Scotland debut after being included in the squad. The 21-year old left-handed batsman has produced some eye-catching performances in the North Sea Pro Series and at Scotland Development level this season.
David Murphy joins the squad for the three matches, as he makes his return from a hand injury which has kept him out of the majority of Northants’ domestic season.
Durham’s Calum MacLeod will return for the final fixture in Edinburgh after county commitments has meant he is unavailable for the Ayr fixtures. His Riverside team mate, Gavin Main, is being rested as a precaution, and the coaching staff will reassess his fitness for game three.
New Zealand A will provide stiff opposition for the young Scots as they head north of the border, after an impressive win over the England Lions and Sri Lanka A.
On the announcement of the Scotland squad Scotland Head Coach, Grant Bradburn, said, “After a block of squad training through July and Scotland trials last week, players are eager to get back into playing mode this week against a very strong NZA side. With precious few game opportunities remaining this summer, the NZA series and the Ireland series away in September will serve as important opportunities for players to confirm their skills at international level.
With injuries to Mommsen, Cross, Main and Smith, and a number of players unavailable due to County commitments, the NZA series will provide several Scotland based players a deserved opportunity to step into the full Scotland side.”
Bradburn will also face his former employees when the opposition arrive on Scottish soil, “Personally it will be nice to catch up with familiar faces in the NZA touring side, having coached the NZA side last year and a number of players from Northern Districts where I coached for five years. NZA contain a number of test players and have recorded some strong performances against the England Lions and Sri Lanka A during their current tour of England. As a side building towards the World Cup in February, we will relish the chance to expose a wider group of players to experience international cricket for Scotland.”
