Scotland Squad for U19 World Cup
Scotland has selected its squad for the coming ICC U19 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.
The young Scots will be led by Arbroath's Ross McLean after securing the only European qualifying spot available in Holland in 2013. Scotland remained unbeaten throughout five matches during the tournament, beating Ireland in a winner-takes-all contest in the final match.
The 2014 World Cup will be Scotland’s sixth appearance in the competition after achieving its best ever finish of 11th in the 2012 version in Australia.
The group will prepare with a week long training camp and fixtures in Sri Lanka, followed by warm-up matches in the UAE against Afghanistan and England, before taking on Pakistan, India and Papa New Guinea in Group B.
Included in the squad is 2013 U19 player of Year, Andrew Umeed, who recently earned a contract at Warwickshire. Chris Sole has also claimed a place after an impressive 2013 for Scottish Cup and Murgitroyd T20 champions Grange, as has 16 year old spinner Ryan Brown who claimed 23 wickets for Scotland U17's last season.
Another new addition to the squad is fast bowler Stuart Whittingham who is a Sussex Academy and Loughborough MCCU member. Whittingham took 6 wickets in a first class match last season against a Northants team including Scotland captain Kyle Coetzer.
Abdul Sabri, Gavin Main and Michael English have all been in New Zealand at the Ben Williams Cricket Academy ahead of the tour preparing for the biggest opportunity of their careers to date.
Lyle Hill and Ruaidhri Smith were unavailable for selection due to university commitments.
Commenting on the squad, Scotland U19 Head Coach Craig Wright said "The players have earned the right to test themselves against the best players in the World at their age group. They performed with impressive consistency in the qualifying tournament last year and now have a fantastic opportunity to show what they are capable of on the World stage."
Captain Ross McLean, who is participating in his second U19 World Cup, added “We definitely believe Scotland can cause an upset. We have players in the squad who played in the last World Cup, so have a better understanding of what to expect and will be drawing on that experience.”
