WCL and I-Cup Schedule Announced

19 Mar

The International Cricket Council today announced the schedule for both the ICC World Cricket League (WCL) Championship and the ICC Intercontinental Cup from 2015 to 2017.

The opening round of the ICC Intercontinental Cup will start in April and run until June with defending champion Ireland facing UAE at home.

The Intercontinental Cup is ICC’s four-day, first-class competition for the leading Associate and Affiliate Members (AMs). The event was first played in 2004, however, it now takes on much greater significance with the winner in 2017 challenging the 10th-ranked Full Member for the opportunity to play Test cricket.

The WCL Championship is ICC’s premier 50-over competition for the leading AMs. The top countries at the end of 2017 will earn direct passage into the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018, while the winner will also have the opportunity to challenge for a place on the ICC’s ODI Rankings from 2018 onwards.

Fixtures in both events are played over seven rounds on a home or away basis, however, in a change from previous events, round 7 (in late 2017) will this time be played simultaneously in a common venue that will be announced in due course.
