Wildcats win first fixture on the road
Hertfordshire 177/5 (50 overs) lost to Scotland Wildcats 180/3 (29.3 overs) by 7 wickets [Scorecard]
The Wildcats started their recent tour of England and Ireland with a match against Herefordshire on Sunday 14 July in the LV Women's County Championships.
Conditions in the morning were a little overcast and it was a surprise for Abbi Aitken when being asked to bowl first after losing the toss.
The Scots opened the bowling with the ever reliable Nadia Wheeler and Abbi Aitken, and they didn’t have to wait long for the first breakthrough when Aitken had Victoria Neal out LBW.
Kathryn White replaced Aitken and didn’t have to wait long for her first wicket of the day courtesy of a low catch by Rachel Scholes.
The Hertfordshire innings continued along with the batters scoring from any loose deliveries. Although the run rate wasn’t out of control the Wildcats only managed to pick up 5 wickets. Chloe Jackson, batting at number 5, proved to be the mainstay of the Hertfordshire innings finishing with 60*.
The coaching team of Kari Carswell and Steve Paige were pleased with the bowling and fielding efforts of the team and felt that the Hertfordshire total of 177 was one that could be chased down.
Openers Fi Urquhart and Rachel Scholes started in confident mood and never looked back. Both batters hammered anything loose to the boundary and ran well between the wickets.
The pair put on 133 before Scholes was out for a well-made 63. Urquhart stayed the course of the innings and finished on 97* to record her highest score in a Scotland shirt.
At the end of the game Abbi Aitken was delighted with the team performance “It was a brilliant performance from the team and it was the best possible start to the week. I felt our bowling unit bowled with great discipline and confidence and the team did well to restrict Hertfordshire to 177-5 on a pitch that should have favoured the batsmen.
Our top order took on the responsibility with the bat and Scholesy and Fi got us off to a great start. I was delighted with the way the batsmen applied themselves and a special mention should go to Fi for her brilliant performance of 97*”
The next game for the Wildcats is on Monday 15th July against Hampshire at Cove Cricket Club.
