Richie Berrington will captain the Scotland men’s squad for their two One Day International matches against Ireland in the absence of regular captain, Kyle Coetzer.

The squad will be without their influential captain for the initial two games of the tour as he completes his Level 4 coaching qualification.

Coetzer will join the squad later in Dubai for the fixtures against the United Arab Emirates at the ICC Academy where he will be looking for the 156 runs to make him Scotland’s top aggregate run scorer of all time.

The Tri-Series will be an opportunity for new faces Michael Jones and Tom Sole to force themselves into the reckoning and impress the coaching staff ahead of the ICC World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe in March.

The squad assembled in Edinburgh today for fitness testing and will depart for Dubai tomorrow afternoon with their first match taking place on Monday 16 January.

Head Coach Grant Bradburn said, “Richie Berrington will captain the team for the two games against Ireland and then assume the vice captaincy for the UAE matches. Richie is highly skilled as a player and hugely respected within our team. It is fantastic that he has agreed to step up into a formal leadership role on this tour, which we believe he will thrive on.

This Dubai series is no different in terms of importance, but we have full confidence in our players to take on different roles. We must continually improve and give players the exposure to grow. Our sole intent is to qualify for the CWC 19 and to do that we must develop depth and allow players to show their vast range of abilities at international level.”
