Day 1 Stumps: Papua New Guinea 285/7 (82.4 overs) Morea 53, Bau 51, Sharif 4/69 [Scorecard]

Scotland got their Intercontinental Cup match under way against Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby on Sunday (1st October).

Captiain Kyle Coetzer admitted it was a physically demanding first day in the heat, after the hosts won the toss an elected to bat first in the four-day encounter, batting for 82.2 overs to finish the day on 285/7.

Vani Morea (53) and Legia Siaka (48) battled back from the early loss of Tony Ura, who was caught by Michael Leask off Sharif for 0.

Sharif was the pick of the Scotland bowlers, returning with 4/69, while Mark Watt, Ali Evans and Leask all collected one scalp apiece.

At the end of the day Coetzer said, “It was a tough day in the heat, the guys plugged away and we didn’t quite get off to the start we would have liked but their top order batters played well and aggressively.

Saying that, we’ve come back into the game nicely now and are three wickets away from bowling them all out and then having a crack at batting.”

The selectors also confirmed today that Scott Cameron would fly out to join the squad, replacing Josh Davey who is suffering with a knee injury.
