CRAIG Wallace hammered a brilliant century as Forfarshire claimed the Angus derby bragging rights with a thumping win over Arbroath at Forthill.

On a day when only two top-flight matches survived throughout the country, Scotland star Wallace claimed centre stage and rewarded home supporters for their patience following a delayed start at the Broughty Ferry venue.

The game had been thrown into doubt by heavy overnight rain but a lengthy mopping-up operation allowed the old rivals to embark on a 27 overs fixture at around 4pm.
It did not take long for Wallace to justify his decision to bat first, the skipper helping himself to a six and a raft of boundaries as ‘Shire raced to 40-0 after just two overs.
Such was Wallace’s dominance that after five overs, with the score on 72-0, he had made 56 and opening partner Rory Johnston – no slouch himself – just 4 while a profligate Arbroath attack offered the remainder in Extras.

Calvin Burnett eventually gave Arbroath a rare moment to enjoy when he bowled Johnston for 36 while Petrie stumped Michael Leask soon after.

However, there was no stopping Wallace who continued to bludgeon the bowling to all corners of the ground on his way to an astonishing unbeaten 152 as the home side posted 253-7.
Any hopes of a sustained run-chase were quickly extinguished when Christian Robertson claimed two wickets in as many balls to send Petrie and Ross McLean back to the pavilion.
It was the start of a procession which saw Arbroath slip tamely to 89 all out, Scott Cameron claiming 4-21 and Robertson 2-21, as Forfarshire stayed on the fringes of the Eastern Premier title race.

Meanwhile in the capital, while the game between Carlton and leaders Grange was abandoned, there was a delayed start at Barnton where Majid Haq inspired RH Corstorphine to victory over a Stewart’s Melville side who are in increasing danger of returning to the ESCA Championship after just one season.

Haq’s 29 runs in a 64-run partnership with Joe Kinghorn-Gray (32) were important in propelling the hosts to 149-5 from their 25 overs.

However, it was the bowling of Scotland’s record wicket-taker which proved decisive, four scalps in quick succession knocking the stuffing out of StewMel who slumped to 74 all out.

Meanwhile the entire Western Premier card was washed-out though they did make a start at Dumfries where the home side made 178-5 from their thirty overs against Uddingston to raise hopes of climbing off the foot of the table.

However, rain returned to prevent the Uddingston reply from getting underway.
