Gala CC is going places as a community sports club. They are on the first steps of their journey but have made some great strides in the last year. So much so that they were crowned ClubSport Ettrick & Lauderdale’s Club of the Year Award for 2017. This is a fantastic achievement for the club and great reward for the huge amount of hard work by a committed group of volunteers.

Off the back of the award the club hope to continue to move forward and attract some local community entrepreneurs who are looking to make a difference and enjoy themselves, at the same time.

The club created their first five-year club strategy in 2016/17 – involving consultation with members, the community, Cricket Scotland, Sports Marketing Network and has three main aims – community engagement, performance and participation. From that the club created four working groups to drive forward key areas of the club and while there has been some teething problems and not everything has been perfect, things are definitely moving in the right direction.

Based on the strategy, the club delivered a series of events at the club in 2017 mainly through the community engagement group, raising the profile of the club, providing the facilities to the community and raising some much needed funds.

The activities included a Reunion, Quiz, Tea in Tent, Junior Registration Night, Rowan Boland Trust Tournament, Hospitality Day, Family Gala Day, Gin Night, Sponsors Day, Tea in Tent 2, Sixes Tournament, Ian Crooks Memorial Game and opening of new artificial wicket, umpire or female changing room and sightscreens, Scary-oke and hosting Galavanters social running group.

The club have plans to develop the club and the facility further as a hub for Galashiels and beyond. And as you can tell, they are more than just a cricket club.

If you are inspired to get involved with this fantastic club – whether you have any knowledge of or experience with cricket, but have a bit of time, some contacts or an idea or two – the club would like to hear from you.
