SCOTLAND MEN DEFEAT IRELAND IN FINAL-BALL CLASSIC
BULAWAYO, ZIMBABWE - JUNE 21: Michael Leask of Scotland celebrates hitting the winning runs at the end of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Qualifier Zimbabwe 2023 match between Ireland and Scotland during the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Qualifier Zimbabwe 2023 at Queen’s Sports Club on June 21, 2023 in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Michael Leask produced a stunning, unbeaten 91 as Scotland completed a dramatic fightback to defeat neighbours Ireland by one wicket off the final ball.

Set a target of 287, Scotland looked a long way from victory when Chris Greaves was dismissed with the final ball of the 34th over, leaving the Saltires 152-7.

But enter Michael Leask who, assisted by a career-best 47 from Mark Watt, struck a magnificent 91 off 61 balls to see his side over the line.

Earlier, after winning the toss and inserting their opponents, Scotland had got off to a dream start when Brandon McMullen removed Paul Stirling and Andrew Balbernie in consecutive balls in the opening over.

McMullen would then remove the destructive Harry Tector, before Mark Watt and Chris McBride also struck to leave Ireland reeling at 70-5 in the 19th over.

That brought Curtis Campher and George Dockrell together, who added 136 for the sixth wicket, bringing back haunting memories of their partnership in Hobart last year.

It would be the golden arm of McMullen that broke that stand when he removed Dockrell for 69, but that would not deter Campher, who reached 120 before he was finally removed by Chris Sole.

Ireland struck 107 in the final 10 overs to complete a remarkable recovery from 34-4 to set Scotland 287.

Scotland’s pursuit got off to the worst possible start when Mark Adair removed Matthew Cross for four, but Chris McBride and Brandon McMullen would provide stability, the former finding the boundary with regularity.

A superb grab from Andrew Balbernie at cover was required to dimiss McMullen off Adair with the score on 56, but McBride would reach his maiden ODI half-century as he took the score to 90 in partnership with George Munsey, playing his 50th ODI.

However, McBride’s dismissal for 56 sparked a period in which wickets fell at regular intervals, Munsey (15) , Richie Berrington (10), Tomas Mackintosh (18) and Chris Greaves (20) all reaching double figures but failing to pass 20.

Scotland were 152-7 when Mark Watt joined Michael Leask at the wicket, and the pair set about rebuilding the innings.

Leask was particularly strong through the leg side as the boundaries began to flow, whilst Mark Watt looked to use his feet against the spinners on his way to a career-best 47.

The pair added 82 for the eighth wicket, but it was after Watt’s dismissal off the first ball of the 46th over that Leask really took charge.

He added 50 with Safyaan Sharif (6) in 27 balls, including taking a Josh Little over for 22 with some incredible striking.

Scotland were left requiring eight off the final over, but the game took a further swing when Sharif top-edged a short delivery from Adair to Paul Stirling, leaving three runs required off the final three deliveries.

A dot ball to Chris Sole increased the pressure before Leask was able to scramble through for a bye off the penultimate delivery, to leave Scotland requiring two off one.

And he managed to get enough bat on Adair’s delivery to send it hurtling down towards the fine leg boundary, to seal a sensational victory.

FULL SCORECARD.
