Scotland’s women fell to a 61 run defeat at the hands of an improved Ireland side in the second of four T20 Internationals in Belfast in a match which saw Abbi Aitken-Drummond overtake Kari Carswell as Scotland women’s most capped player.
After taking only their third ever victory against the Irish on Monday, Scotland could not reproduce the same performance with bat or ball, allowing their rivals to level the series.
Ireland batted well, reaching 134 for 4 in 20 overs with Gabi Lewis top scorer on 47 runs. Scotland’s player of the match from the first game Katie McGill took 2/26 off four overs.
Chasing the target of 135, Scotland lost opening batters Becky Glen and Sarah Bryce early on. Captain Kathryn Bryce put on 17 runs and McGill led the way again with 19. But after losing the top order batters, the Scots had an uphill, task needing over 10 runs an over in the last 9 overs.
Abbi Aitken Drummond overtook Kari Carswell as most capped Scotland player on 153 appearances and scored a rare six during her time at the crease. But ultimately the run chase was beyond the tailenders and the Scots must bounce back from a heavy defeat.
The third match in the series will be played on Wednesday at Stormont starting at 1pm with Scotland looking to re-establish their lead in the series.
Head Coach Mark Coles “It was a disappointing performance, but it happens in T20 cricket. The thing for me is that I think that that’s the best that Ireland can play which is great. We weren’t at our best today so we just need to put it behind us and understand that we have to be better tomorrow. We’ve missed out a couple of times and our best players have missed out and they’re going to score some runs at some stage and it’s going to be very exciting to watch.”
