Scotland’s women aim to start 2022 on a high at Commonwealth Games qualifier

Scotland’s women are aiming to pick up where they left off last year as they travel to Malaysia to take part in a five-team round-robin qualifying tourmanent for this summer’s Commonwealth Games.

The Scots, who took an emphatic victory at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier in Spain in August, winning all of their matches, will be looking to maintain that form as they face hosts Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Kenya and Bangladesh in Kuala Lumpur, with one team going on to take part in Birmingham 2022.

The tournament marks the start of an exciting year for the team who will also take part in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Global qualifying tournament in the summer.

A squad of 14 will travel to Malaysia led by captain Kathryn Bryce and featuring one previously uncapped player, Rachel Slater.

20-year-old Slater, a left arm medium-pace bowler, came up through the ranks at Yorkshire and currently plays for the Northern Diamonds.

Scotland captain Kathryn Bryce said: “We’re really looking forward to testing ourselves against teams like Sri Lanka and Bangladesh who’ve been near the top of the world stage for a long time.

“We’ve seen some good progression during our preparation for the tournament so far and while we know it’s going to be challenging, I believe that we are ready and we are going into the tournament with the goal of winning.”

Scotland, who face a seven-day quarantine before they can train in Malaysia, will begin their campaign against the hosts on the 18th January.
