Grange and Heriot’s all set for Scottish Cup showdown

As we enter the final weekend of the domestic season all eyes will be on Grange Cricket Club as Heriots and Mazars Grange contest the Final of the Citylets Scottish Cup tomorrow.

Grange, having already secured the Easter Premiership title and the CSL play off will be eyeing up a rare treble. Dylan Budge, Ryan Flannigan and Preston Mommsen have been in fine form with the bat across all formats throughout the season, and with formidable strength in depth provided by the youth of Tom Mackintosh and the experience of Neil McCallum, Nick Farrar and Gordon Goudie, the Edinburgh side will be confident both in posting or chasing a total.

Former Scotland seamer Goudie remains a lynchpin of the bowling attack, too, and spinners Andrew Brock and Charlie Peet are also likely to play an important role as Grange look to back up their thrilling win over Sunday’s hosts in the Semi-Final by winning the cup for the first time since 2014.

Heriot’s booked their place in the Final after beating Arbroath in similarly memorable fashion and will hope the in-form South African Hayes van der Berg can pick up from where he left off after his recent superb 164 against Watsonians. A feature of Heriot’s Semi-Final win was the all-round contribution of their top order, however, and Keith Morton’s side will again look to Loedolff Potgieter, Peter Ross, Mike Shean and Chris Ashforth for momentum with the bat.

Elliot Ruthven, Sean Weeraratna, Ryan Brown and Keith Morton, together with van der Berg, Shean and Ashforth, give Heriot’s plenty of options with the ball as the 2017 Eastern Premier champions bid for their first Scottish Cup success since 2012.

“The Scottish Cup final is always a special day in the cricket calendar, so to have booked our place in the final is something we’re really excited about,” said Grange captain Preston Mommsen. “We’ve had to work really hard to get this far and we’re determined to finish the competition on a high.

“Heriots have proven that they’re a quality side this season so we’re looking forward to the challenge, but whatever happens, I’m sure there is going to be a great atmosphere at Ferguslie and it should make for a great spectacle.”

“The club as a whole is in a really positive place with each of our three XIs at the top end of their respective leagues and the first XI looking forward to the T20 Finals also,” said Heriot’s captain Keith Morton.

“It would be very fitting to win the trophy again this year 40 years on from our first success but we know we will have to work hard on the day and all the boys are thoroughly looking forward to what is one of most iconic events in the Scottish cricket calendar.”

The Scottish Cup Final will also be streamed live for the first time in the history of the competition.
