Scotland Men A advanced to the European Cricket Championship Finals Day after a mixed first two days at Cartama Oval.

The Saltires finished fourth in their group, winning once and losing three, and will face Norway in the Eliminator on Saturday morning.

After suffering back-to-back defeats to Portugal and Norway on Thursday, Scotland bounced back on Friday afternoon with a crucial seven-wicket triumph over Luxembourg.

Luxembourg started brightly after being inserted by Chris McBride, striking 35 in the opening two overs before Jack Hogarth made the breakthrough, Thomas Martin holing out to Liam Naylor for 20.

Luxembourg, also searching for their first win of the competition, would struggle to find any momentum from then on, losing wickets at regular intervals. Michael English was the pick of the Scotland bowlers as he took 2-6 from two overs, whilst sharp fielding from the Scots brought two run outs, as they restricted their opponents to 111-7.

The Saltires reply got off to a sticky start as Liam Naylor and Oli Hairs fell cheaply, but it was left to Michael English and Taimoor Ahmad to restore order. The pair added 69 in just 22 deliveries, English striking 38 from 15 deliveries to go with the impressive 65 he made against Portugal on Thursday.

He would depart with the total on 86, and it was left to Chris McBride and Ahmad to finish the job, the latter doing so as he bludgeoned a six down the ground to bring up his half-century from just 18 deliveries.

Scotland would fail to build on that victory later on Friday evening, losing to Germany under the lights after posting just 95-8, a target that was chased down inside seven overs for the loss of four wickets.

Scotland Men A will now face Norway at 1030 on Saturday morning, live on Viaplay Xtra, the first of a potential three games on the route to Championship Week qualification.
