Cumbria v Scotland U15 at Nunwick CC
Cumbria v Scotland U15 at Nunwick CC on Sunday 15th June 2014
Scotland failed to impress on their first outing of the season in the ECB County Cup. On winning the toss, captain James Dickinson elected to bowl on a mottled, damp and two paced pitch. Itty Malic and Ollie Brown bowled accurately but without menace on the slow surface, as the Cumbrian batsmen seemed happy to see off the new ball without adventure.
This proved a good move as runs were hard to come by throughout the day and Cumbrian Marcus Stables patiently compiled a match winning 89 in 49 overs. He displayed excellent shot selection early in his innings before opening out later, striking three towering straight sixes with impressive timing. Stables was helped in the second half of his knock by the Scots who dropped him three times.
Pick of the Scottish bowling were Malik, Brown and left arm spinner Andrew Appleton but it was feared that on a difficult surface 185 was 30 runs above par.
So it proved. On an increasingly up and down track the Scots found progress extremely difficult. The only chink of light in the second innings was a hard fought 59 run partnership between Owais Shah & Jamie Crawley. Despite finding it difficult to compile runs fluently that pair dug in and gave the visitors some hope. The drinks interval typically broke the partnership when both fell immediately after and the innings subsided to 54 runs short despite a late flurry of 18 not out from Will Hardie.
The Scots had paid the penalty for allowing the hosts to score too many runs on a bowler friendly wicket through inaccurate bowling and weak fielding.
