East claim clean-sweep in Women's Regional Series

25 Aug

The final regional game took place on Sunday (21st August) at Doo’cot Park.  The East of Scotland had already claimed the trophy, but they were keen to maintain their unbeaten streak.

The Rest of Scotland captain Abbi Aitken won the toss and elected to field first.  Her decision looked justified when she bowled Hannah Rainey in the second over the game.

After that breakthrough though the Rest had to wait a while for their next wicket; Sarah and Kathryn Bryce have been in dominant form this year and that proved to be the case on Sunday.  They shared a 71 run partnership in a second wicket stand, and it was only broken by some excellent fielding from Samantha Haggo.

Katie McGill batting at 4 had other ideas and went on to share an 88 run partnership with Sarah who was eventually out last ball of the innings for a superb 68, McGill finishing on 48 not out.  The Rest of Scotland looked lacklustre in the field and dropped some crucial chances throughout their innings.

After a hearty lunch the Rest of Scotland set about chasing down the total.  Abtaha Maqsood was out early LBW to Kathryn White and when Lorna Jack and Kari Anderson came together they put on a quick fire partnership of 34 before both fell in quick succession to leave the Rest in a compromising position at 45-3 after 12 overs.

Aitken and Becky Glen had a partnership of 27 before Glen picked out Ruth Willis at mid-wicket off the bowling of Caitlin Ormiston, just as she was looking like accelerating.

The other notable partnership was between Aitken and Lois Wilkinson, their partnership of 45 put the Rest of Scotland in a good position going into the final few overs.  However when both lost their wickets the Rest of Scotland ended up being 29 runs short, giving the East of Scotland victory and a comprehensive series win.

The Wildcats are back in action on Monday the 29th August when they play Cheshire in the Royal London One Day Cup, they will be looking for victory to secure their place in division 3.
