East defeat Rest of Scotland in Women's Regional series
The second women’s 2016 regional series match between the East and the Rest of Scotland took place at Guthrie Park, Brechin on Sunday 5th June.
After winning the toss East captain Kathryn Bryce had no hesitation in opting to bat first. Annette Drummond and Ollie Rae opened the batting, with Rest of Scotland captain Abbi Aitken going for a seam and spin combination as she opened the bowling with Rachel Scholes.
The Rest of Scotland didn’t have to wait long for the breakthrough, Drummond run out for 4 by Kari Anderson. Oli Rae and K Bryce took the score to 48 before Rae was LBW off the bowling of Haggo. K Bryce followed soon after being caught behind by Lorna Jack off the bowling of Samantha Haggo.
Haggo was soon to strike again as she removed Katie McGill first ball, thanks a superb catch by Scholes at slip.
The East were left teetering on 66/5, however Sarah Bryce proved to be a rock she guided the East to a competitive score of 186-8 after their allotted 50 overs.
Some clean hitting and smart running between the wickets by the lower order - Ruth Willis scoring 16 and Alice Baldwin 12 * - helped get the East to a total that looked unlikely at one stage. Congratulations must go to Sarah Bryce who finished on 69 not out.
After the tea interval the Rest of Scotland went about chasing down the total and got off to a bit of a flyer with openers Scholes and Liz Priddle.
The score had raced to 43 in the 6th over before the first wicket fell, Priddle caught at cover by K. Bryce of the bowling of Kathryn White for 21.
Scholes was still on the hunt for boundaries and was out bowled to White in the 10th over. Lorna Jack and Kari Anderson shared a partnership of 54, but when Jack was run out for 13 with the score on 112 the game was very much in the balance.
The Rest of Scotland middle and lower order were left disappointed in their batting efforts, with only 32 runs added for the last 7 wickets, Anderson providing the only resistance and finishing on 52 not out.
The Rest of Scotland were all out for 144 in the 36th over. Katie McGill was destroyer in chief for the East team as she picked up 4 wickets for 17 runs.
The East of Scotland lead the regional championship after getting their second win of the series. The format switches to T20 on the 19th June at Strathmore CC.
