Eastern Knights Win Latest U15 Inter-Regional Match

08 Jul

The Western Warriors U15s played host to the Eastern Knights U15s at Titwood (Clydesdale CC).  [Scorecard]

Following a very brief shower prior to the toss, the Knights elected to bat first.  Their innings owed much to the solid base that their top four created.

Skipper James Dickinson (12) and Jamie Crawley (44) put on 32 for the first wicket, Crawley added a further 47 with Finlay McCreath (22) and 47 again with Eric McIntosh (21).

However, the Knights will have been frustrated to fall from 126/2 to 142/8 as three well-executed run outs and two wickets for Taimoor Ahmad threatened to de-rail the innings.

The last 10 overs saw very sensible batting from Robbie Irvine and James Stuart - as the pair played the correct shot to each delivery, rotated the strike well and took the total up to 177/9.  Ihtisham Malik finished with 2/27 from his 10 overs and Haroon Tahir bowled a tidy spell of off-spin, with 0/29.

In reply, despite the early loss of Sam Allan (1), the Warriors looked to be building a similarly good base.  However, with the score on 48, two wickets in one over from Andrew Appleton saw both Ahmad (17) and Owais Shah (17) caught.

This was the start of a period of very slow scoring as the spinners tied the Warriors down.  Appleton finished with 3/19 off his 10 overs and he was given good support from Dickinson (2/30).

At one point, the Warriors were 72/3 but then 73/6 and only the 50-run seventh wicket partnership between Harry Briggs (20) and skipper Kallum Dhami (22) looked like it might give the Warriors an outside chance.

Unfortunately the game ended very abruptly as, in the quest for quick runs, some panicked shot selection saw the final 4 wickets fall in 3 overs - with Max Hancock finishing with 3/21.  Warriors 125 all out.

A deserved win for the Eastern Knights.  The coaches of both teams will want to see the number of wide delivery reduced and the batters who get in kick on to get a really big score, as the Inter-Regional programme continues throughout the summer.
