Grange CC Win U13 Scottish Cup
Grange CC Win U13 Scottish Cup Grange CC emerged as the winners Finals' Day in the Cricket Scotland U13 National Cup. Finals' Day was held at Stirling County CC, on Sunday 17th August 2014.
The first semi-final, between Grange and Kinross-shire, was a very one-sided affair. Grange batted first and scored 128/5 in their 20 overs, thanks to three of their batters (Charlie Peet, Robert Edwards and Freddie Peet) reaching the retirement score of 30 - and providing the innings with real acceleration in the late overs. In reply, Kinross-shire were quickly bundled out for only 25 - with Freddie Peet returning figures of 3-1-7-3.
The second semi-final was a much closer contest. Clydesdale CC batted first and made 93/4 in their 20 overs - wight Carlton bowling and good fielding having kept the run rate in check. At one point, and thanks to 31 from Murray Whittaker and 29 from Gregor McIntyre, Carlton looked like they would cruise home. However, Clydesdale did produce a late fightback - but it was too little, too late. Carlton winners with 9 deliveries to spare.
In the 3rd / 4th play-off, Clydesdale batted first again. Once again, 'dot' balls would come to haunt the Glasgow side as their 76/9 off their 20 overs was never really going to be enough. Only Daniel Cairns (22) provided any real resistance as the Kinross-shire bowlers kept to a very simple, and very effective, plan; one of bowling full and straight. In reply, Kinross-shire raced to an emphatic victory. Jack McCreanor scored 26 and Toby Douglas 21*, as they completed their victory in 10.3 overs.
The final was much closer. Carlton won the toss and asked Grange to bat first. Led by Ben Davidson (31 ret) and Robert Edwards (25) Grange scored 109/8 off their 20 overs - despite 4-0-16-4 from Cameron Ede. Grange then got off to a good start with the ball too, as they picked up a couple of quick wickets. Grange always appeared to be just ahead of the game - but Gregor McIntyre (28) and Ruairidh Main (30 ret) just about kept Carlton in touch. However, it would prove just too much for them to do - as Grange held their nerve well. Carlton 100 all out, leaving Grange as U13 National Champions for 2014.
Thanks must go to Stirling County CC for hosting the day so well, to the umpires for ensuring the matches ran smoothly, to all the players for their efforts and to all parents and spectators who added to the atmosphere on the day.
But the final mention, and congratulations, must go to Grange CC and their players and management on a deserved win.
