Grange U13s win ECB Northern Finals Day

29 Jul

Grange U13’s travelled this July to compete in the ‘North’ Finals day of the National ECB NatWest Cup.

The Edinburgh Club travelled having played 5 games to be crowned Scottish Champions and having also defeated the Northumberland Champions, Corbridge CC, at a game earlier in the month near Newcastle in a further qualifying fixture.

Grange assembled at Neston CC on the Wirral as part of a 4-team play-off with Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cheshire Champions to see who would be crowned North of Britain winners.

Scotland vs Lancs & Cheshire vs Yorks.

Grange lost the toss and were inserted by Formby CC in the semi final on a green wicket, as the ball moved about. Grange lost regular wickets, albeit a key stand between Buchan and Hood led to a competitive total of 112.

The Scots needed to bowl well, and did, bowling out Lancs champs in 13 overs. Wickets for opening bowlers Freddie Peet and Muncaster, while Pearson and Charlie Peet finished the innings off.  3 for Pearson, 5 for Charlie. Brilliant performance in the field. A sprinting catch by Pearson was a real highlight.

Cheshire had beaten Yorks so Alderley Edge CC in the Final. Grange won toss and with rain forecast opted to bowl.  Freddie Peet took 2 quick wickets albeit the surviving opening bat looked dangerously competent. 1st change seamers on but return to left arm spin via Charlie Peet did the trick again. Opener batted pretty much through but Peet ripped through the rest of the order. Six wickets this time for Peet jnr (all bowled or LBW) to dismiss their opponents all out for 72.

A very mature chase by Bruce-Jones and Muncaster saw Grange break the back of the task with 49 for the first wicket. Impressive innings by Muncaster in particular. Hood ultimately calmly brought the Scottish Club to the victory target with overs to spare and 7 wickets in hand, with his second impressive knock of the day.

There was plenty of praise for the Scottish team from the opposition, their supporters and the ECB representatives.

Grange are now the U13 ECB Club Champions of Scotland and the North of England and as one of 6 British Regional Winners now travel again to take part in a round robin supercup/league down at Oundle School, Northants later in August.
