Highveld Lions v Scotland XI
Scotland began their tour of South Africa today with a 20 over fixture against the Bizhub Highveld Lions at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom.
To ensure that both teams could give their respective squads time in the middle, both fielded 12 players.
The hosts batted first and took advantage of a flat wicket and quick outfield with South African capped, Neil McKenzie the star for the Bizhub Highveld Lions smashing 67 to help set Scotland a target of 181.
Both Richie Berrington (4-26-2) and Gordon Goudie bowled well for the Scotland XI and were backed up by a sharp spell from Safyaan Sharif, who claimed two wickets after missing most of the Scottish domestic season through injury.
In reply, Richie Berrington followed a good bowling spell with a fine innings of 82 from 42 balls to give Scotland a chance of victory. Ultimately they came up 20 runs short of the Lions total, Ryan Flannigan also contributed with the bat scoring 28 runs from 26 balls.
It was a good first test for the Scotland XI and they now prepare for tomorrow’s fixture against the Kolkata Knight Riders.
After the match Scotland coach, Pete Steindl said: “It was good to get a run out today, and naturally we were a little rusty - we have only had one practice session on grass in the last month. It was a decent hit-out with some positive things coming from it. Gordon Goudie and Berrington were both impressive with the ball and bowled in good areas. Richie then followed that up with some clean striking of the ball that we know he is capable of.”
Highveld Lions 181-6 McKenzie 67, De Kock 37, Berrington 4-26-2, Sharif 4-43-2
Scotland XI 161-7 Berrington 82, Flannigan 28, Morris 4-20-2, O’Reilly 4-18-2
