Scotland’s leading sports stars were honoured last night (Thursday December 4) at the Sunday Mail and sportscotland Scottish Sports Awards 2014, held at the Glasgow Thistle Hotel.

Hosted by Jim White, one of the country’s best loved sports journalists, the night celebrated the excellence throughout Scottish sports, recognising athletes and teams for their outstanding achievements over the course of 2014.

The Local Hero Award went to Iain Latta for his commitment to Aberdeenshire Cricket Club where he has held almost every role and worked hard for the all the local associations involved in the development of the sport. For over 50 years Iain has worked tirelessly for the benefit of the sport in his local area.

Iain was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement award by Sport Aberdeen earlier in the year. The 64 year old was honoured for his more than 50 year contribution to developing cricket in the Northeast with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Iain's involvement with Aberdeenshire Cricket Club began way back in 1961 as a junior and he has since held a variety of important posts at the club. In 1996 Iain became match secretary for four years after which he became a member and the President of Aberdeenshire Cricket Association.

Following his presidency he became chairman of the City and Shire Cricket Development Group and he has also represented ACC on Aberdeen Sports Council for a solid 10 years. His scoring duties also grew in scale as he scored regularly for Cricket Scotland at national and regional games at home and away.

A total of 12 awards were up for grabs on the night, with a number of sportscotland institute of sport network supported athletes among the winners.

Louise Martin, Chair of sportscotland and member of the judging panel, said:

“All of the winners have contributed to what has been a memorable year for Scottish sport, and I congratulate them all on their achievements. The awards give us the chance to showcase the very best of Scottish sport as well as allowing us to acknowledge some of the remarkable individuals that have enjoyed so much success recently.”
