Knights come out on top at Forthill
The Eastern Knights made it two T20 Blitz wins out of two as they held their nerve to stave off the challenge of Caley Highlanders at Forthill. [Scorecard]
In a tension-packed finale, the hosts needed 27 from the last three overs with plenty of wickets in hand - but their valiant chase failed by just five runs.
Highlanders will be aiming to bounce back immediately when they square up to Western Warriors on holiday Monday at the same venue in the Pro50 Cup.
Former Australian age-group internationalist Tom Beaton (67) and Scotland skipper Preston Mommsen (40) were the mainstays of the visitors’ innings.
The pair added 73 for the third wicket, inspiring the Knights to reach 158 for five.
In the wake of a solid opening partnership of 45 between big hitter Craig Wallace and Chris Venske, it was Chris Greaves who spearheaded the pursuit - only to be left stranded on 54 not out as they fell just short.
Knights coach John Blain reflected: “First and foremost, it was an excellent game of cricket.
“For us the combination of Mommsen and Beaton set it up, then debut boy Elliot Ruthven looked an exciting member of our attack, while the spinners were good in the middle period.
“For the Highlanders, Wallace played some excellent shots and went off like a train.
“Greaves looked measured and well organised, and Adrian Neill bowled tidily.”
