North Sea Pro Series - Week 1 Preview

02 May

The North Sea Pro Series starts this weekend which will see the Reivers and Highlanders of Scotland take on the Hurricanes and Seafarers of the Netherlands in six weeks of T20 and 50 overs cricket.

Played in a round robin group, clubs around Scotland will host back-to-back games of the two formats which will allow players the chance to step up from club cricket and prove themselves at a higher level. With the YB40 domestic competition being scrapped, the pro series fills a gap in the calendar that will see more professional cricket being played in Scotland.

In the year before for the World Cup, this competition gives players a great chance to show their credentials to earn a ticket on the plane to Australia and New Zealand. Both squads include a mix of established players and new, and will come up against some experienced Dutch players in the likes of Peter Borren and Wesley Barresi. While the Dutch failed to qualify for the World Cup their T20 performances in Bangladesh turned heads, beating England again, and many of those stars will be on show in the North Sea Pro Series.

The first round of home matches will be hosted at Titwood, starting with a T20 on Sunday with the Reivers against the Hurricanes. Colin Mitchell Reivers Manager spoke ahead of the game. “We can't wait to get this up and running. The foray into Holland will add a new dimension of fresh competitive opposition. In a year where all our regional players should be looking to impress a new national coach this format will set them all new challenges."

Graeme McLaren (Drumperllier), Craig Young (Poloc) and Con de Lange (Clydesdale) all get a chance to impress, as do the Ayr duo of Scott McElnea and Neil Smith who have come through the junior ranks to the first team.

The Highlanders will be on an early flight out to Amsterdam on Sunday as they take on the Seafarers at the VCC Voorburg. The squad is full of youth, but many already have a vast range of experience at the crease with the likes of Ewan Chalmers and Hamish Gardiner and both Munsey and Gossain will be looking to carry over from good performances with the ‘A’ squad in Durham. Matthew Parker gets another chance after having a long spell out of the Scotland set up plagued with injury.

All matches are free to watch and gives a great chance to see professional cricket around Scotland. The first T20 match will start at 3.30pm at Titwood, home of Clydesdale CC. Cricket Scotland will be providing live score updates on the website, as well as twitter @CricketScotland and @NorthSeaPS.

Each week you will be able to see a round-up of the weeks game as well as a preview for the following week. QuipuTV will be providing video highlights which will be shared online by Cricket Scotland.
