Regional Pro Structure Expanded in 2016

14 Apr

Cricket Scotland is pleased to announce the expansion of the existing Pro Team structure for the men’s game from two to three teams in 2016.

The Pro Teams will revert to the existing regional identities of Western Warriors, Eastern Knights and the Caledonian Highlanders and the teams will play each other in two competitions, the CS Pro50 Cup and the CS T20 Blitz.

The wider structure will mirror the three team inter – regional competition at youth level and recognises the strong identities that exist within the three regions. In addition the Women’s game sees a change from the previous brands with The East taking on The Rest of Scotland.

The three men’s squads have announced the appointments of new Head Coaches with John Blain appointed Head Coach of the Eastern Knights, Con de Lange in charge of the Western Warriors and Graeme Beghin leading the Caledonian Highlanders.

Cricket Scotland Performance Director Andy Tennant stated “We are delighted to have three high quality coaches in charge – and doubling up these roles with their coaching duties in strong clubs within their region positions them perfectly to assess the playing strength available. We are genuinely excited about the new structure and what these three young coaches can contribute”

The new domestic set up replaces the 2014 and 2015 North Sea Pro Series competition between the 4 Scotland and Netherlands representative sides however the collaboration between Cricket Scotland and the KNCB will continue with plans for title winning teams from Scotland and the Netherlands meeting in an end of season North Sea Trophy Final.

Commenting further on the new structure Tennant added “Having resurrected our domestic performance structure six years ago we are convinced that the three team structure with strong regional identities is the best way to build a sustainable base for this level of cricket in Scotland. The new competition will provide a wider platform for a larger amount of young talent and ambitious club players to join our Scottish based contracted professionals to showcase their skills at the highest level domestically. We are also delighted to retain the North Sea connection with the North Sea Trophy Final and we look forward to our winners hosting the Dutch champions towards the end of the season”.

The announcement is also joined by news of the 2016 Regional Programme for the Women’s Game with a series of fixtures for the 2 regional women’s sides over both 50 over and T20 formats of the game. The East will take on The Rest of Scotland over 5 fixtures and new Women’s Head Coach Steve Knox will be looking forward to seeing the best players in action and competing for places in the Wildcats and National Team squads this summer.
