Scotland defeat PNG in WWT20Q opener
Scotland turned in a solid performance during their first ICC WWT20 Qualifying match, defeating PNG by 8 wickets at Thailand Cricket Ground on Saturday. [Scorecard]
After winning the toss captain Aitken elected to field first on a warm day in Bangkok, with Kirstie Gordon given the opportunity to open the bowling for her country. The spinner didn’t waste any time to strike, snaring 2 wickets in first and third over.
Things got better for Scoland, as PNG were soon 23/4 after a quick throw from short fine-leg by Drummond secured a run out, and Ruma chopped on to her stumps following a flighted delivery by Anderson.
Scotland pilled on the pressure as their opponents quickly slid to 32/8, leg-spinner Abtaha Maqsood took two wickets, caught and bowled and LBW, with Rachel Scholes taking another.
Only two batters, Siaka (11) and Jimmy 13, managed to reach double figures for PNG, but were both victims of run-outs as they made their way to 53, before being bowled out in the final over of their innings.
Scotland suffered a slight wobble at the start of their reply as aggressive openers Fi Uquhart and Scholes departed within the first 5 overs, with the score on 17.
Sam Haggo joined the experienced Kari Anderson as the pair set about the target. No risks were required - and none were taken - with some smart running between the wickets as they made the fielders work on what was a large outfield.
Victory came for the Scots in the 16th over with Haggo unbeaten on 11*, while Anderson’s 24* ensured she would receive player of the match.
Next up for Scotland is the experienced Bangladesh tomorrow morning at the Asian Institute of Technology ground.
