Scotland started their ICC European Women’s Division 1 campaign with a comprehensive 7 wicket win over rivals Holland at Rugby School.

The Netherlands batted first and lost two wickets with the score on 9, after a direct hit by Annette Drummond at mid-on dismissed de Lange for 0 and Kathryn White clean bowled Hannema for a duck.

The experienced White soon had another scalp when the ball struck Vermingmeier on the back pad, and the umpire raised the dreaded finger.

The score moved on to 44 as the spin of Kirstie Gordon entered the attack, her 4 overs went for a miserly 9 runs, and halted the Dutch advances with the wicket of Siegers for 12.

Tessa Van Der Gun stuck at it, compiling 23 runs from 36 deliveries, until she was undone by an excellent away swinging delivery by captain, Abbi Aitken, to peg back her off-stump, with the score on 60.

The Netherlands innings came to a close on 73, with Kalis finishing on 15 and Braat 7, from their 20 overs.

Scholes hits down the groundIn reply, the Scots lost Drummond when she was bowled for 6 by Braat early on in the chase. Fellow opener, Rachel Scholes, kept her composure as she set about the target.

The Scots lost Fiona Urquart (9) and Anderson (1) on the way, but White joined Scholes to ensure no more wickets would fall, as Scotland reached the target in the 16th over, to register an opening day win.

Coach Anderson said, “I’m really pleased to get a win on the first day, we executed skills well and are now keen to build on this for the rest of the week.

As a bowling unit we stuck to our plans and only bowled two extras. Rachel batted well and got us off to a good start, it was pleasing to see her take form into her first Euros.”

Scotland now take on Ireland tomorrow at 10:30am.
