Scotland fall just short in rain affected encounter

14 Aug

Nethlands 55/6 (9 overs) Kalis 18*, Gordon 1/9, beat Scotland 50/5 (9 overs) Drummond 22, Siegers 2/16 by 5 runs. [Scorecard]

Scotland’s women contested their third match of the ICC European Division 1 Championships in Rugby against the Netherlands.

In a rain affected contest, which saw two innings of 9 overs per-side possible, the Netherland batted first as they searched for their first win of the tournament.

The Dutch were only able to find the boundary twice throughout their innings, but ensured that the running between the wickets was good enough to set a competitive total. Sterre Kalis top-scored with 18, as 55 runs were set for Scotland to chase.

The Scots did pick up regular wickets, with Kathryn White, Sam Haggo, Kirstie Gordon and captain Aitken all collecting one scalp each.

In reply, Annette Drummond stuck 22 from 21 deliveries before she was the second Scottish wicket to fall in the 6th over with the score on 37.

Kari Anderson was then bowled by Brunning from the final ball of the 8th over, and White and Elizabeth Priddle were both dismissed in the final over of the match - searching for the 5 required runs to win.

Ollie Rae was required to hit the final ball of the match for a maximum to tie the match, but the Netherlands held their nerve to restrict only a single, to complete the match and secure victory.

Scotland now play today’s opponents and Ireland in a double header tomorrow.
