Scotland U19s started their pre-World Cup tour with a match against a strong Ananda College side at the P Sara Oval in Colombo yesterday (3 February), ahead of their World Cup campaign which starts in Dubai on 14th February.

Scotland won their first toss of the tour and elected to bat first in sweltering conditions.

The top order found it difficult going against an accurate attack, who bowled to 6/3 fields, while holding a tight line on fourth stump. This led to the Scottish total to 79/4 after 24 overs.

Zander Muir, after a difficult start to his innings, got his head down, and in partnership with Alex Baum, started to gain a foothold against the opposition. These two batsmen top scored with Muir (50) & Baum (41) setting up the last ten overs.

Chris Sole (18*) and Abdul Sabri (21*) pushed the total along nicely to close the innings on 225 for 8.

The side felt that, although a shade light, the total could be defended with a tight bowling and fielding display.

The result of the match was decided on the back of a 95 run partnership between Visera (74) & Arachchige (43) for the fifth wicket.

After surviving a couple of scares these two settled in to take the game away from the young Scots, who showed great persistence in the face of adversity to concede defeat by only two wickets.

Both left arm spinners, Mark Watt (2 for 37) and Chayank Gosain (2 for 26) bowled tidy spells, as did Chris Sole (2 for 47), while Stuart Whittingham bowled with menace at the top of the innings.

The Scots will need to cut down on bowling extras and snap up all the chances offered to them in the coming weeks to ensure they are ready for the stiff challenges in Dubai.
