Scotswatch: Machan the star for Sussex
After taking a bit of time off to recover from the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup Scotland’s cricketer’s have been in action as the season gets underway.
The Scotland batsman, who struck a century against Ireland in the World Cup warm-up game and a made 90 runs collectively against both of the eventual finalists, caught the eye as his innings came to an end after plundering 135 runs.
It turned out to be late call up for Machan after injuries created the spot in the first XI, and it was an opportunity he took full advantage of, crashing 18 fours and 4 sixes.
His innings helped to put Sussex into a strong position, eventually concluding on 345, at the end of day 1.
Calum MacLeod was the only other Scot in LV= County Championship action, making 44 in the first innings before hitting the winnings for Durham in the second, as they comprehensively defeated Somerset.
Josh Davey did his prospects of a first team spot no harm with an impressive all-round performance at Taunton Vale.
He returned with 4/44 to put his side on the front foot against Hampshire 2XI, and then struck 146 in Somerset’s reply.
There was also success for two Scots in the 2XI match between Kent & Northants and Warwickshire at Beckenham on a pitch that produced a remarkable 1255 runs.
Andrew Umeed eventually took the Bears second string to victory with a composed innings of 164 as they chased down the combined sides total, following an earlier 142 from Kyle Coetzer.
