Scottish Cup Preview 19/4/2013
The competitive Scottish cricket season starts off with a bang this weekend as the first set of Scottish Cup fixtures take place across Scotland.
The national cup sees some high-profile matches contested, with a number of teams capable of emulating Heriots success last season, and some underdogs looking to cause an upset.
The holders, who begin their campaign away to Falkland in Group E, are placed in arguably one of the toughest groups this year, facing strong competition from a talented Dumfries side that won the Western Premier Division in 2012.
Last year’s runners-up Watsonians welcome Freuchie, and will be looking to get off to a good start in order to go one better and claim the trophy.
Group G, which is dominated by teams from the west of Scotland, features two quarter finalists from last year in the form of Clydesdale and East Kilbride, these two face each other on the opening weekend.
Group B features some Western teams hoping to make a big impact on the tournament this year – Poloc and Ayr facing each other on the opening day, while Stoneywood-Dyce make the trip to Penicuik.
Group H features a whole host of mouth-watering games, with Uddingston, Aberdeenshire and newly promoted Glenrothes, grouped together with last season’s semi-finalists Stenhousemuir – whilst Arbroath and Forfarshire face each other on the opening day in Group A.
Semi-finalists from last year, Carlton, look favourites to progress from Group C, and begin the cup with a game at home to Royal High Corstorphine.
Dundee High School, newly promoted to the Cricket Scotland League, will be looking to cause an upset in their first outing in the Scottish Cup against Grange, and are placed in Group F alongside the likes of Greenock, they start with a home tie against Renfrew.
