Secondary Schools Girls' Competition

16 Jun

Moray Cricket Girls and George Watson’s College were winners of their respective secondary school girls’ competitions that was held on Monday 13th June at Stirling County CC as part of Cricket Scotland’s National Schools Finals week.

The S1-S3 competition was played out between 10 teams in 2 groups of 5, with group winners Moray Cricket and George Watson’s College meeting in the final after winning their respective groups.

In the S4-S6 competition, 6 teams played 5 games each with winners of the competition the team from George Watson’s College.  The girls from George Watson’s didn’t make it easy for themselves on their way to claiming the trophy, winning their final game against Strathallan by 1 run!

Kari Carswell Women’s Cricket Manager for Cricket Scotland said “The tournament and the increase in the number of teams is encouraging for the girls and women’s game in Scotland.

It’s great to see so many schools entering, some for the first time, and some now entering two teams.  I think it shows that offering cricket in schools for girls is more common now than it was 3 years ago, and that is really exciting for me.

Cricket is a great game for girls, the skills needed are easily transferable from one striking game to another and we keep the rules nice and simple so no one gets confused.  I’d like to say a huge thank you to all the staff who coach the girls, the volunteers who came out in their numbers to help umpire and score and all the girls for taking part.

The female game in Scotland is now a prominent feature of our strategy at Cricket Scotland and we want to provide as many opportunities as possible to females of all ages”.
