Sport Scotland Local Hero Award for Ammar!

01 Dec

Cricket Scotland would like to congratulate Ammar Ashraf of East Renfrewshire CC on winning the Local Hero Award at the Scottish Sports Awards 2016.

Ammar has been the driving force at his club as a coach, development officer, fundraiser, groundsman, manager, recruiter and volunteer!

This is not Ammar’s first award, he previously gained recognition for his hard work from Cricket Scotland in the summer, scooping ‘Biggest Change Maker’ in the LMS Club Awards 2016.

Head of Participation Ian Sandbrook was full of praise for the dedicated volunteer, “Cricket Scotland are absolutely delighted that Ammar has won the prestigious `Local Hero` Award. This is fantastic recognition for a truly inspirational volunteer that has made an immeasurable contribution to East Renfrewshire CC and his local community. Well done and congratulations from the entire cricket community.”

Winning this award was certainly no mean feat as he was nominated alongside David Duke from Street Soccer (Scotland) and Scott Glynn at Tranent & District Community Sports Club.

As previously mentioned, Ammar has been the catalyst behind the remarkable rise of East Renfrewshire CC and here are some of his achievements to date:

  • Led the move to a new venue at Woodfarm Playing Fields. Ammar co-ordinated the fund-raising and installation and led the lengthy job of liaising with East Renfrewshire Council to establish the principle of a cricket ground at Woodfarm and negotiating the lease and council support
  • Established an indoor training facility at the Barrhead Foundry
  • Runs an extensive school coaching programme which now sees sessions delivered to all 29 schools in the Local Authority, including the introduction of cricket to Barrhead
  • Organised the purchase of a grass cutter for the outfield – which he cuts himself!
  • Coordinates the club`s training sessions at their new venue and at Cowan Park, Barrhead.
  • Started an indoor cricket competition during the winter
  • Supporting schools cricket in the area with teams entering Cricket Scotland National Schools Competitions at all levels

Congratulations once again to Ammar for all the hard work, we look forward to seeing further developments at the club.
