U15 Scottish Cup Finals Day
The 2013 Scottish U15 Cup took place at a bright but blustery Myreside on Sunday 11th August. This year saw Largo CC, Clydesdale CC, Grange CC and Forfarshire CC compete at the finals day.
In one semi-final Largo CC took on Forfarshire CC at Craiglockhart. In good conditions Largo won the toss and decided to bat first. Unfortunately Largo were never able to get their innings going with wickets falling at regular intervals. They were eventually bundled out for just 56 by a well disciplined and accurate Forfarshire bowling unit.
In reply, Forfarshire made light work of chasing down the small total in just 6 overs and without the loss of any wickets to comprehensively seal their place in the final.
The other semi-final saw Grange CC up against Clydesdale CC in a classic east v west showdown. After winning the toss Grange CC elected to bat first at Myreside. After a shaky start and the loss of 2 early wickets, Grange recovered well and were able to accumulate throughout the innings but were made to work for every run against a well-drilled Clydesdale side. Grange eventually went on to post a competitive 110 for 3.
In reply, Clydesdale always appeared slightly behind the run rate and unfortunately left themselves a bit too much to do in the final few overs. Good contributions from Dhami with 32 and Anderson 18 wasn`t quite enough to see Clydesdale home, falling 7 runs short of the Grange total.
The 3rd/4th play-off was an exciting affair which went down to the wire between Largo CC and Clydesdale CC. In a much improved effort with the ball Largo were able to bowl Clydesdale out for 116 in the final over. The main contributors with the bat for Clydesdale were Dhami with 20 and Mahmood 19.
In reply, Largo put in a fine effort with the bat to chase down the Clydesdale total for the loss of only 2 wickets. The chase was timed to perfection with the winning runs coming up in the final over of an exciting and tense match
Final - Forfarshire v Barclays Grange Forfarshire 137/5 (R Johnstone 43) beat Barclays Grange 94 all out (J Hogarth 6 for 15 (inc hat trick).
The final saw the two strongest teams – Forfarshire and Grange – meet in what was a much anticipated match up. Forfarshire won the toss and decided to bat first.
The Forfarshire innings went along steadily but the match was evenly poised with Grange bowling tightly as the batsmen also accumulated the runs well.
The final 5 overs was to be the difference for Forfarshire as they finished extremely strongly and saw them post an excellent 137 off their 20 overs. The best performers with the bat for Forfarshire were Rory 43, Connor 27 and Cameron 22.
In reply, Grange faced the tough task of chasing nearly 7 runs per over against a determined Forfarshire side.
Grange started the innings off well but a mixture of some tight bowling, good fielding and well set fields meant that the pressure mounted on the Grange batsmen and they started to lose wickets regularly.
By the mid-point of the chase the required run rate was getting too much for Grange and they were leaving themselves too much to do in the final overs despite still having enough wickets in hand. The defining over of the match came when Forfarshire opening bowler Jack Horgarth came on to bowl the 18th over.
Horgarth went on to bowl a phenomenal over that saw him remove Grange mainstay Jamie Crawley and then take a superb 4 wickets in 5 balls, including a hat trick, to bundle Grange out for 95 and seal a 42 run victory and ensure the trophy would be heading to Forfarshire for the winter. Horgarth finished with the superb figures of 6 for 15 in the final to produce the dominant and match winning performance of the day.
