Vale of Leven CC Update

19 May

In 2014, the Vale of Leven Cricket Club Committee unveiled an ambitious plan to develop its club, based in Alexandria (West Dunbartonshire).  Funding from the West Dunbartonshire Sports Facility Fund, Awards for All and The Cricket Development Trust (Scotland) saw ground improvement and facilities work, costing £45,000, completed during 2016.

A cricket development plan for schools was also designed in conjunction with the Active Schools network. Club coaches and assistants offered four 1-hour training sessions to all primary schools in the Dumbarton and Vale of Leven areas. Nearly 500 P6/7 (including a few P4/5) school pupils attended these sessions, based on the Cricket Scotland Kwik Cricket format.

The in-school delivery programme took the club coaches and assistants two months to complete – with all participating schools being invited to attend one of two cricket festivals, in early May.  It was a great end to the project and it gave the young pupils the chance to enjoy a morning in the sun at the club’s recently upgraded facilities.  Over 140 children participated in the festivals which were organised thanks to help from the local Active Schools Co-ordinators.  On each day two Kwik Cricket matches were played simultaneously, along with four concurrent skill zones: batting, bowling, fielding and catching.

Reflecting on the project, Club President Hugh Hutchinson said: “Thanks must go to all club members, to the schools and active schools staff for assisting with the project and to the school pupils for their efforts in-school and at the festivals.  Everyone enjoyed the festivals which took place in great, sunny weather for cricket!  The club is looking forward to continuing this project during the 2016/17 school year.”
