Day 1 [Scorecard]

The Scotland A squad travelled down to face Warwickshire’s Second Eleven for a three day encounter at Edgbaston.

There was a comeback to representative cricket for Dewald Nel who had a contract with Kent cut short due to a serious back injury in 2011. Aman Bailwal had been added to the squad after promising youngster Gavin Main pulled out, having sustained a side strain playing for Durham Academy.

Both teams fielded 12 players with only 11 batting, as Scotland A captain Preston Mommsen lost the toss, and was asked to field first on a bright sunny day.

Nel managed to get through an opening spell of 8 overs before he was replaced by Richie Berrington with the score on 26/0.

Former England internationalist Darren Maddy and former England U19 starlet Ateeq Javid made full use of a decent deck to ensure Scotland A had a tough morning in the field.

Maddy reached his half century in the 22nd over with Warwickshire 2XI on 88/0, and he was soon to be followed by Javid in reaching that milestone.

It wasn’t until the afternoon session that Scotland A claimed their first wicket – Javid caught behind by Matthew Cross from the bowling of Aman Bailwal for 65, with the scoreboard showing 156/1.Lions at Edgbaston

Maddy continued his impressive innings, eventually reaching his 100 off 156 balls before being caught by Mommsen in the slips from the bowling of Majid Haq.

Scotland prospect, Freddie Coleman, who has earned a summer contract at Warwickshire looked in good touch as he struck 84 before the home side declared on 400/4.

Nel was the pick of the bowlers finishing with figures of 3/104.

The Scots had to deal with a difficult spell before the end of the day, and eventually finished on 33/1, after losing Calum MacLeod for 1, leaving them 367 runs behind with 9 wickets remaining.
