West Regional - National Primary Schools’ Cup

27 May

The West Regional Qualifying Tournament in the National Primary Schools’ Cup took place at Titwood (Clydesdale CC) on Wednesday 25th May 2016.  The tournament saw 87 pupils, from 9 different primary schools, come together to participate in a morning of fixtures.

The schools were split into three groups of three teams, with each group playing a round robin format.  Any school hoping to progress to National Finals’ Day had to win their group.

In Group A, Merrylee Primary School (Glasgow) won both their matches, defeating Arkleston Primary School (Renfrewshire) by 38 runs and Kelvinside Academy (Glasgow) by 13 runs.

In Group B, it was The Glasgow Academy (Glasgow) who won both their matches – beating the High School of Glasgow Junior School (Glasgow) by 24 runs and Hamilton College (South Lanarkshire) by 41 runs.

In Group C, there was again a school who won both its matches.  Hutchesons’ Grammar School (Glasgow) beat Aitkenbar Primary School (West Dunbartonshire) by 52 runs and St John the Baptist Primary School (South Lanarkshire) by 48 runs.

The group winner with the highest total of net runs was declared as tournament winners – and was the first school to win through to the National Finals.  This was Hutchesons’, finishing on +100 runs.  This left The Glasgow Academy (+65) and Merrylee (+51) to contest a straight knock-out match to see who would be the second school to secure qualification.

In this winner-takes-all match, The Glasgow Academy bowlers kept Merrylee (NET 223) in check – picking up six wickets and bowling 26 deliveries which were not scored off of.  In reply, a succession of clean striking, and big sixes, ensured that The Glasgow Academy would record a big win (finishing on NET 388) as they secured their place at Finals’ Day.

The final standings on the day were:

1)     Hutchesons’ Grammar School
2)     The Glasgow Academy
3)     Merrylee Primary School
4)     St John the Baptist Primary School
5)     Hamilton College
6)     Kelvinside Academy
7)     High School of Glasgow Junior School
8)     Arkleston Primary School
9)     Aitkenbar Primary School

Congratulations to Hutchesons’ Grammar School and to The Glasgow Academy for winning through to represent the West Region at the National Finals.  Thanks must go to Network Rail for their continued support of the competition, to Clydesdale CC for providing a venue for the tournament, to all the participants for their efforts, to the staff who assisted each school and to the six young volunteers who came along to help out by umpiring and scoring (and earning a Kwik Cricket Game Course certificate) on the day.
