Scotland Squad Gather Before Africa mission

Scotland’s men departed from Glasgow yesterday afternoon, ahead of what will be one of the squad’s toughest assignments to date.

The aim? Claim one of two spots at the ICC 2019 Cricket World Cup.

Pretoria is their initial destination where they will be able to prepare for their group matches, starting against Afghanistan on 4th March.

In South Africa, the squad will play two practice matches against Ireland (20th February) and the Netherlands (22nd February), allowing the coaches the option to experiment and acclimatise to conditions similar to Zimbabwe.

The team gathered at the Holiday Inn, Edinburgh for an intimate awards ceremony to celebrate the success of 2017, while also looking at the challenges that lie ahead.

It was no surprise that Kyle Coetzer collected numerous awards following his stellar year with the bat.

The captain said “Awards night is always a special night for all. I remember looking up at the stage during my days at Durham and thinking ‘I’d like to do that one day’, now the experience has kicked in and I’ve managed to have a good year this year. You’ve got to keep riding that as long as you can, I’m a big believer in that.”

Encouraging speeches were delivered by Cricket Scotland Chair Tony Brian, CEO Malcolm Cannon and Former International, now Board Member, Douglas Lockhart, as the excitement around the squad’s departure built.

Safyaan Sharif collected Bowler of the Year from former-Scotland bowler John Blain, after some fine performances throughout 2017, while Richie Berrington again claimed Fielder of the Year.

Alasdair Evans was also awarded the first Scottish Cricketers Association’s Personality of the Year for his work in setting up the SCA.

Cricket Scotland would like to thank their partners and sponsors Parkmead, Tribe Yoga, Nuffield Health and High5 for their support in assisting the squad in their preparations.
