Scotland Under 19s lost their second game of the 2024 World Cup as the West Indies triumphed by five wickets.

The Saltires, inserted by their opponents, posted a competitive total of 205-9 from their 50 overs, Jamie Dunk striking an impressive 57, and had their opponents in bother at 111-5 in reply, before Jewel Andrew and Nathan Edward combined to steer their side home.

The Scottish opening pair began brightly, aided by some wayward bowling from the West Indies in the opening stages, as Nathan Edward and Isai Thorne struggled to find their radar.

Jamie Dunk and Adi Hegde brought up their half-century partnership in the 13th over, with Dunk the chief aggressor, finding the boundary with an array of excellent strokes through the offside.

The introduction of spin saw Hegde look to move onto the front-foot, using the sweep to great effect as he and Dunk advanced the Scotland total to 89 in the 22nd over.

Nathan Sealy would make the much-needed breakthrough for the West Indies, trapping Hegde LBW for 32.

Dunk, joined at the crease by the busy Alec Price, would go to his 50 with a boundary through third man, but he would depart for 57, caught at cover off the bowling of Raneico Smith.

Price quickly moved to 31, striking Joshua Dorne over the mid-wicket boundary for six, before falling in unfortunate fashion as he dragged on a delivery from Isia Thorne.

That would spark the loss of four wickets for just 16 runs as Owen Gould, Uzair Ahmad and Ibrahim Faisal all followed as the Saltires fell to 171-6.

Bahadar Esakhiel and Ruaridh McIntyre then provided some much needed resistance, adding 25 at a run-a-ball, with McIntyre taking 10 off the final two deliveries of the 48th over, pulling Thorne for six before depositing him through mid-wicket the following ball.

Esakhiel would depart to Nathan Edward, caught by Nathan Sealy for 19, and, after taking the total past 200, McIntyre would also fall, bowled by Thorne.

The final delivery of the innings would see Nikhil Koteeswaran run out as he attempted to come back for the second, as the Saltires posted 205-9.

Scotland’s defence of that total got off to a flying start, as three wickets in the opening 10 overs rocked the West Indies top order.

A stunning grab from Adi Hegde at backward point brought about the first breakthrough, diving at full stretch as Adrian Weir drove loosely at Ruaridh McIntyre.

The West Indies skipper Stephan Pascal looked in imperious form early on as he struck five boundaries in a run-a-ball 26, before he then holed out to Jamie Dunk at long-off from the bowling of Logan Briggs.

And after his first ball was pulled for four, Ibrahim Faisal gained immediate revenge on Joshua Dorne as the West Indies batter miscued a short delivery to Bahadar Esakhiel, who claimed a simple catch at mid off.

Despite the early setbacks, the West Indies continued their pursuit of 206 apace with Jordan Johnson and Mavendra Dindyal playing positively, the latter in particular striking the ball to the boundary with regularity.

With the score on 90 Adi Hegde made a vital intervention to remove Dindyal, for 29 from just 24 balls, a superb delivery from round the wicket clipping the top of off stump.

And the Saltires were right in the game when Qasim Khan struck to remove Johnson, Hegde taking another sharp catch behind square to reduce the chasing side to 111-5.

Enter Jewel Andrew, who struck a stunning 130 in his side’s opening game with South Africa.

The wicket-keeper batter, ably supported by Nathan Edward, took the game away from Scotland as he struck an outstanding 64 from just 60 deliveries.

He and Edward added an unbroken 95 for the sixth wicket to dampen any hopes of a stunning Scottish victory, reaching their target inside the 36th over.

Scotland are back in action for their final group game on Saturday, when they face South Africa live on Sky Sports Cricket.
