SOUTH AFRICA CHASE DOWN SCOTS TOTAL TO TOP GROUP

South Africa chased down 270 in 27 overs to top Group B, as they defeated Scotland by seven wickets.

The Saltires had posted what looked a competitive total of 269-9 behind outstanding knocks from Owen Gould (97) and Jamie Dunk (90), but that total was hauled down in rapid fashion by the hosts.

Losing the toss and batting first for the third-straight game, the Scotland openers made a watchful start, before Adi Hegde was the first to fall in the 11th over with the score on 28, undone by a vicious yorker from Riley Norton.

Looking to up the rate, Jamie Dunk began to use his feet against the spin of Juan James, twice depositing him back over his head for four in back-to-back overs.

Alec Price then joined in the fun as he slog-swept James over mid-wicket for consecutive boundaries, but he fell in the following over to Sipho Potsane, trapped LBW.

That brought Dunk and Owen Gould together, and the pair would add a stunning partnership of 115 in 121 deliveries, with both men looking to dominate the South African attack.

Dunk would be the first to his 50, reaching the mark with a superbly timed flick for four through square-leg, before his captain followed him to the landmark, reaching his half-century in just 51 deliveries.

The pair took the Scotland score to 200 in the 42nd over, but Dunk would perish as he looked to hit out, bowled by Riley Norton for 90.

Uzair Ahmad would need just one ball to see himself in, striking Tristan Luus for two monstrous sixes in as many balls over the leg-side, and then showed great touch to drive through the covers for four.

His third six would clear the ground as he despatched Norton high and handsome over mid-wicket, but he would fall the following ball attempting to do the same, for 23 from just eight deliveries.

And Bahadar Esakhiel would follow quickly, miscuing a Kwena Maphaka delivery to Norton, to depart for just one.

Owen Gould then launched into the South African attack, hoisting Maphaka for a six and consecutive fours in the same over, before depositing Romashan Pillay over cover for a maximum.

The Saltires skipper would fall agonisingly short of what would have been a magnificent hundred, picking out Pillay on the long-off boundary from the bowling of Maphaka.

The innings would end with a hat-trick of run outs from the final three balls as Scotland scampered for every run possible, finishing on 269-9.

South Africa’s pursuit of 270 started superbly thanks to Steve Stolk who took Qasim Khan for three boundaries in the opening over.

However, it would be the third over in which Stolk and South Africa would stamp their authority on the run chase.

34 runs came from the over, Stolk putting on an obscene dsiplay of ball striking as he took Khan for five sixes and a four, a six from the final delivery bringing up his half-century from just 13 deliveries.

There would be no respite for a Scotland attack unable to call on Ruaridh McIntyre, who was unavailable to bowl through injury, as Stolk and his partner Lhuan-dre Pretorius continued on their way.

The 100 partnership was brought up on the first ball of the eighth over, but Nikhil Koteeswaran made the breakthrough as Pretorius holed out to Alec Price for 22.

Koteeswaran struck again to remove Stolk LBW for a brutal 86 from 37 deliveries, and Adi Hegde then dismissed Tristan Luus as South Africa were reduced to 151-3.

Dewan Marais and David Teeger came together and continued to take the Scotland attack on, Marais striking three sixes in a superb 50-ball 80, as he and Teeger saw their side home in 27 overs, a victory that sees the hosts finish top of Group B.
